Nurturing an active thinking community through questions and discussion, Satchie Haga

This presentation introduced how Bloom’s taxonomy of questions and student led discussions were integrated into a University global topics curriculum. Four courses with TOEIC levels ranging from 180 to 600 held similar learning targets about specific global topics but different language targets. By the end of the semester all students were able to hold a 10 –
minute discussion predominately in English. Direct instruction and practice of creating and answering the different kinds of questions fuelled student inquiry and conversation. Frequent student – led discussions utilising discussion questions cultivated a responsive community that empowered students to think more critically about topics important to them.
