TOHOKU OUTREACH

The tragic images of devastated coastal hamlets throughout north eastern Japan in March 2011 deeply affected members of the Learner Development SIG, just as they affected so many people around the world. And like many, initially the SIG sought ways to support students and teachers affected by this disaster through material and financial donations. However, in March 2013 a group of 10 LD SIG members visited Kesennuma, Oshima, and Rikuzentakata in the Tohoku region to hear firsthand from community members and to seek ways to make a longer commitment to supporting the people of Tohoku as they rebuilt their communities.

Ahead of this outreach weekend, the SIG had been introduced to a local community leader, Kazutoshi Musashi, in Tokyo. A few months later, when they visited Rikuzentakata, members of the SIG met up with Musashi, his daughter, and other children. In November 2013 Musashi was an invited speaker at the SIG’s 20th anniversary conference. His participation led to further discussions of outreach by the SIG for children in Rikuznetakata, which would lead to the ‘Children’s Accounts Translation’ project. In December 2013, the SIG was given a copy of Looking Back: This Past Year After the Earthquake –- a collection of 93 reflections written in Japanese by the students at Kesen Junior High School in Iwate.

Despite being located at sea level on a strip of land bordered by a river and the ocean, all staff and students present on 3.11 managed to evacuate the building and climb to higher ground in time to avoid the onslaught of rising water. The students’ reflections touch on themes of survival, trauma, recovery, friendship, and gratitude, and students and school leaders felt it was important to share these reflections with a broader audience.

Nearly 80 people, mostly SIG members working alone or with their students, translated, edited, and proofread the English translations, creating a bilingual collection of reflections that is now available online at http://lookingback311.wix.com/start . We hope the website can help other communities in Japan and beyond learn from the experiences of the Kesen Junior High School children who recount how friendship, gratitude, and school routines helped them navigate the traumatic event and its long-lasting aftermath. We also hope that language teachers around the world can find ways to use the bilingual texts with their students.

A limited edition print run has also been prepared, with copies of the bilingual collection of the children’s accounts donated to key people and community meeting points in the city of Rikuzentakata.

The SIG also maintains a web resource “Learning about Reconstruction in Tohoku” that was put together for the LD20 conference in 2013. If you have ideas for expanding this resource or examples of how you used this resource with your students, we’d love to hear from you. Please contact the LD SIG coordinators, Mathew and Mayumi.
